How do MindAid Coping Keys work?

MindAid Coping Keys use principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT. CBT is a form of psychological therapy based around helping you understand, manage and change your thoughts (cognitions) and actions (behaviour).

Research has shown that one's thoughts and unhelpful "self-talk" can affect one's mood, physical feelings (bodily symptoms) and behaviours. Thus, an individual can alter their emotional state by changing the way that they think or view a situation or an event. Helpful thinking is consistently associated with less mental illness (e.g., anxiety, depression and stress), and an increase in protective health behaviours, productivity and social engagement.

How are the Coping Keys different to Positive Thinking or Positive Affirmations?

The Coping Keys promote helpful thinking which is not the same positive thinking or the same as positive affirmations (aspirational statements). In order to examine the differences, consider the following example.

An individual is about to give an oral presentation to work colleagues and worries "I will look stupid" and so tells himself using positive thinking or a positive affirmation, "I am the best public speaker ever!", or "Everyone will love the presentation!". Now, consider a likely outcome for this person when they do not do as well as expected or not everyone enjoys their presentation. The positive thinker is left wondering why their expectations did not come true and they leave the presentation disappointed that reality did not measure up to their expectations.

Consequently, the initial positive emotions experienced after reading, thinking and believing a positive thought or affirmation is replaced by negative emotions such as despair, misery and hopelessness when the individual realizes that the goal cannot be attained. This leads to a strengthening of the original belief (e.g., "I will look stupid") and the problem is actually made worse for the person.

Another problem that can occur with positive thinking is the self-fulfilling prophecy. This occurs when thinking about something leads you to the very consequence you are concerned about. In the oral presentation example, imagine someone who expects to look stupid or say the wrong thing. As a result of this worry, they may be glued to their notes, focus too much on saying the right thing and have a less enjoyable time presenting then they might otherwise have experienced. Thinking anxious thoughts leads to behaving anxiously and the exact outcome that was feared.

In contrast, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) states that it is not the situation itself, but rather how we interpret or appraise the situation at that particular moment that determines how we feel. As a consequence, one of the key tenets of CBT is to encourage adaptive and realistic thought patterns. Therefore, the focus is on identifying and promoting thought patterns that represent helpful responses to difficult situations. These thought patterns promote behaviour change which will generate positive mood. CBT has been found to be very effective in the treatment of a wide range of social and emotional difficulties. However, generating alternative and more adaptive thoughts is typically very difficult when experiencing strong emotions.

How do I use the Coping Keys?

We suggest that you keep the cards close by (e.g., pocket, purse, car, desk, wallet etc) so that you can quickly refer to them both on a regular basis and as needed. You can remove a favourite card from the key ring to carry it with you or put it on a location where you will see it often, like the fridge, on a mirror, on your computer screen etc.
